Fall 2010 Newsletter

FALL 2010

Buckle yourself in. Gird your loins. Tighten the harness. Grin and bear it… it's summer in NY. Lounge around with a tall glass of anything cold and think cool, good thoughts; like what classes you're going to take at Sew Materialistic.
I find it hard to do any real work during the hot months of summer, but oh, do I have a head full of plans for the cooler weather! We’ve come up with so many new classes that there isn't enough time in the week, so we had to put off some for the really cold days of winter- they're coming too, you know.
My favorite pick:
Although I have tried many different fusible webs, I always come back to Wonder-Under, a two-step web (and no, that's not dancing on the internet). I always keep a bolt at home because I never know when the muse will strike. Come in for a free demo with Malke.
New items in stock:
* We are expecting new gift items forthat perfect quilter in your life- it can be YOU… you are worth it!
The Infomercial:
My Mitered Corner Method: instead of coming down where the fold is, exactly even with the edge of the quilt, sew with a 1/16 of an inch over the quilt edge. Next, iron the binding away from the body of the quilt, but not the mitered corner. Fold the binding over the back of the quilt, finish as desired and the mitered edge will fall exactly into place.
We will now be having scrap baskets. Fill the quart size bags for $3 each. It’s like quilting candy: all you can stash, but no calories! YUM!
Midnight Madness is back! Mark your calendars for Sat. Dec. 11, from 7 pm to 7 am. See class list for more details.
We’ve been busy planning our next Quilt Shop Hop to Southern Connecticut. Our last one to Southern NJ was a big success, so don’t miss out on this trip! Please call or check out class list for details.
We now offer demonstrations for schools and organizations; everyone will leave with a
finished project. Please call Malke for details.
Looking for something new for your party or affair? Sew Materialistic will be offering Party Workshops! Participants will make an age appropriate project. Please call Yehudis for details and mention ‘party’ @ 718-338-6104.
We’ve finally joined the times and now have a Facebook page! Please become our friend ☺!
You’ll find updates to our NEW Monthly Drawing on Malke’s blog (www.thequilter.wordpress.com), as well other Sew Materialistic news and nonsense…

HAPPY AND HEALTHY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!
From all of us,
Malke, Blima, Lena, and all the Teaches

know he/she has a window.

SPRING/SUMMER 2010 NEWSLETTER

It’s March and walking to work this week, I was pleasantly surprised to hear the parrots on Avenue I loud and clear again. And another thing. Out of hard packed earth, I noticed the first buds of tulips poking through. Can spring be far behind?

Our field trip to the quilt show in Somerset was lots of fun. Hoping more of you will participate in some of our planned trips. We are scheduling some really special trips this season:
- On Tuesday, May 11, we will take a day trip to some Southern NJ shops. A box lunch is included. Fee: $25. Limited space, so register early!
- Another trip is scheduled for Tuesday, June 15, and an overnight for Monday- Tuesday, August 9-10. Please call 718-338-6104 to book a seat.
*Cancelled trips will incur a 10% surcharge.

New Items:
1- Supreme Slider- if you’re into free motion quilting, a handy dandy to have so your quilt moves easier over the bed of the machine.
2- Quilt Halo- again to make free motion quilting more controlled without finger/ hand cramping. Designed by Sharon Schamber, an award winning quilter.
3- As always, loads of new fabrics!

My favorite pick: the Snag Nab It. My granddaughter got married this February and I of course made a wedding Chuppah (canopy) in neutrals and whites. After it was quilted, Merrie and I noticed many black threads that got caught in the sandwich. I was very upset until I thought of the Nab It. Usually used for snags on sweaters, it worked like a dream on these stray threads.

Infomercial:
A blatant plug for my next door neighbor, Joseph of Vias Sewing Machine Repair. He is honest, dependable and fast. Everyone I know is happy with his work so if you have a sick machine or even a VERY sick machine, bring it into Joseph or call #718-677-6474. No computerized machines please.

Although we got very few quilts for our challenge this year- they were all beautiful. Check them out on our blog. The winner #3: Claudia! Congratulations and I’m sure you’ll spend your prize money wisely at you know where! Hope to see more entrees next year.

Thank you to the Quilter of the Month- Cecilia. Your quilts are gorgeous!
Remember, our summer hours are in effect from Thursday July 1 to Wednesday, September 1. Monday-Thursday 11:00- 5:00. Closed Friday- Sunday. We will be open some evenings, call in advance.

Have a great summer!
Hope to see you soon,
Malke, Blima, Lena

P.S. Oops, forgot to mention our Fat Quarter Sale, June 6: BUY 15 for $15! And our Mothers’ Day Sale- if you are a mother, know a mother or have a mother- no tax!
